Referral requirements & protocols

What helps us to scan & report better.

CT - referral rules, contrast and eGFR

CT requires a referral from a medical practitioner. Please state the clinical question, relevant history and whether contrast is acceptable. For contrast studies, recent eGFR is helpful in patients over 60, diabetic, or with known renal impairment; we can check on site if needed. Note: metformin and previous contrast reactions.

Ultrasound - preparation by region

Upper abdomen: fast 6 h. Female pelvis and early pregnancy: full bladder. Renal: well hydrated, don't empty bladder. MSK, thyroid, testes, DVT, soft tissue: no preparation. Please mark laterality.

Ultrasound-guided injections

Specify injectate (e.g. corticosteroid + local), site and laterality, and anticoagulation status. Diagnostic scan and injection can be combined in one visit. ACC-funded injections attract a $50 patient surcharge.

Echocardiogram (TTE) - indications

Launching 03 November 2026 with limited sessions; slots are allocated by clinical need. Please include indication (murmur, dyspnoea, hypertension, arrhythmia, follow-up) and urgency. Reported by senior cardiologists within 48 h.

Paediatric imaging

Children 0–17 receive $60 off CT and ultrasound. Please note weight for CT dose planning and any sedation requirements - we do not provide sedation on site.

Radiologist reporting a CT scan at AXIS

Our reporting team

Senior radiologists and cardiologists, on site - not offshore.

Every study is reported by a senior specialist working in the building. That means same-day additional views, guided procedures on the spot, and a radiologist you can actually ring.

Your request

Before your X-ray

No preparation needed. Bring your referral (paper or on your phone). Most visits take under 20 minutes.

Before your CT scan

Some CT scans need 2–4 hours without food, or extra water. We’ll tell you exactly what to do when we call.

Before your ultrasound

Abdominal scans: nothing to eat or drink for 6 hours. Pelvic and pregnancy scans: arrive with a full bladder.

Before your pregnancy scan

For scans before 14 weeks, drink 750 ml of water an hour before and don’t empty your bladder. Later scans need no preparation. Bring your referral and maternity details; partners and whānau are welcome.

Before your injection

No preparation needed. Plan a quiet rest of the day. We’ll time it with your physio or GP’s plan.

Before your transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE)

No special preparation. Allow 30–45 minutes. You may be asked to change into a gown, and small ECG stickers are placed on your chest during the scan.
